The Importance of AP Exam Scores
College Credit: strong AP scores can save you money and time in college by awarding credit for introductory classes, allowing you to be placed into more advanced undergraduate courses as early as your freshman year. For example, a score of a 3 or higher on AP Psychology will give you credit for Psychology 301 at UT Austin.
Honors & Awards: Scoring 4-5 on an AP exam is a strong indication to colleges that you will perform well in college courses. Additionally, if you score above a 3 on multiple AP exams, you may qualify for an AP Scholar Award. These awards can help round out your college application profile and demonstrate mastery of subject material relevant to your major.
AP Exams: Results and Trends
Every year, College Board compiles and releases its score distribution data for all AP exams. Taking a look at this information can help you understand what to expect this May. If the percentage of high scores drops in a given year, that could indicate a more difficult exam or stricter grading. On the flip side, rising scores might suggest changes in curriculum, teaching quality, or test design. By analyzing this data and the percentage of students who scored a 4 or 5 on any given exam, you can identify exam difficulty over time and where you might need extra preparation. You can see that AP Physics exam scores have fluctuated in 2022, 2023, and 2024, with this year being the lowest for AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism and AP Physics C: Mechanics.
