Education:

University of California, Los Angeles (B.S in Biology, Minor in Global Health)

Counseling Experience:

Leanne understands how the uncertainties within admissions can affect students and has been forging ways to make the process more digestible and rewarding for students and families. This includes organizing a series of presentations for several years at her former high school, highlighting the different application portals, essay writing, and what underclassmen can do to strengthen their resumes before applying. As an undergraduate, Leanne assisted in UCLA Circle K’s annual Personal Statement Reading Program and Key to College events open to local Key Club chapters. She also became involved in Matriculate at UCLA, advising high-achieving high school students nationwide on their college applications, supporting them through their challenges, and celebrating their successes.

Counseling Philosophy:

Every individual has unique experiences that shape them into who they are today, however, it is not always easy to share these stories in a way that reflects one’s strengths and individualities. Being a counselor, advisor, or mentor means providing individuals with personalized guidance and helping them through their journey in a way that makes them feel heard and empowered in their decisions.

Teaching Experience

While at UCLA, Leanne worked as a statistics Peer Learning Facilitator (PLF) with the university’s Academic Advancement Program (AAP). With this role, she facilitated Peer Learning sessions with small groups of undergraduate students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in higher education. During sessions, Leanne led peers through self-made, course-related worksheets to help develop their quantitative reasoning, analytical, and critical thinking skills. During the pandemic, Leanne also assisted in the efforts of Tutoring for Heroes, working one-on-one with the son of a nursing student to better his understanding of algebra and geometry.

Educational Philosophy

Although a large part of education is about learning the material, it is also about creating an environment where individuals feel comfortable asking for help when they have questions or are simply curious.

Interesting Fact:

Leanne studied abroad at Yonsei University in South Korea for a summer, cafe hopping, enjoying convenience store finds, and attending concerts between classes.
